Some 14% of children aged 9-19 in Moldova do not have separate beds and have to share one with another member of the household, revealed a study by the Analysis Center CIVIS.

Psychologist Irina Novac, of the Moldovan Association of Psychology Practitioners, has told IPN that this is a concerning situation, as the children whose intimacy is violated in this way may not be able to respect the intimacy of others.

The psychologist added that this may also affect these children's self-concept, as in when they start dedicating less time to their own interests and to what is important to them.

The situation is more common in rural areas. The study indicates that boys are favored compared to girls in getting a separate bed: the share of girls without a bed of their own is by 1/3 larger than that of boys.

The findings are included in the study called “Effects of Migration on Children and Elderly Left Behind”, conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of Labor, Social Protection and Family.
