The year 2014 was declared the Year of Dumitru Matcovschi by a Government decision, IPN reports.
“The poet’s merits are inestimable and in 2014 we can render at least a part of the homage to Dumitru Matcovschi,” said Prime Minister Iurie Leanca.
The works of Dumitru Matcovschi are well-known and appreciated in Moldova and abroad. In 1989, Dumitru Matcovschi was conferred the title of People’s Artist for special merits. The same year, he became the laureate of the State Award of the Republic of Moldova. In 1997, he was awarded the Poetry Prize “Nichita Stanescu”, while in 2000 he became a knight of the Oder “Romania’s Star” in the rank of commander. In 2011, he received the Order “Cultural Merit” in the rank of Grand Officer, in the category A “Literature”. He was a knight of the Order of the Republic, a titular member of the Academy of Sciences, a laureate of the medal “Mihai Eminescu”, and a citizen of honor of Chisinau municipality.
Dumitru Matcovschi died from an enduring disease at the age of 73 on June 26, 2013.
