The Communist MPs proposed that 2015 should be declared the Year of Veterans of the 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War. A relevant draft decision was approved by the Parliament’s commission on social protection, health and family. This year it is 70 years of the end of World War II, IPN reports.

Decision author Oleg Reidman said they want to keep the feeling of profound esteem and gratitude for the heroism and courage of war veterans and to organize jubilee events so as to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the end of the war.

Within a month, the Government will work out and present the national program of events dedicated to this year to Parliament for adoption.

The draft decision was approved by the votes of six members of the commission – three Communist MPs and three Socialist MPs.  The Lib-Dems said the year should be named Year of Patriotic Veterans in World War II. Their proposal will be discussed in the Parliament sitting, where a final decision will be taken.

World War II started on September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland. The Soviet Union was attacked by the Nazi Germany in June 1941. The war ended in 1945.
