The number of confirmed cases of anthrax rose to ten. Six persons with cutaneous anthrax were admitted to the Chisinau Infectious Diseases Hospital “Toma Ciorba”, while another four to the Cahul District Hospital. A number of 38 people are under medical supervision at the place of residence. Most of them are from Vadul lui Isac village. Three are from Cotihana, while another two from Colibas, Cahul district.
Director of “Toma Ciorba” Hospital Victor Deatisen has told IPN that the state of the patients is satisfactory. They are now receiving treatment. A single case of anthrax should already arouse public concern if the source of infection is not identified and liquidated.
Contacted by IPN, director of the Cahul District Hospital Anatol Malcov said the four patients with anthrax worked at the farm where the infection was discovered. The presence of Bacillus anthracis was detected in the skin and meat of a calf and a sheep slaughtered in Vadul lui Isac. The given farm is in quarantine now.
Anthrax is a serious disease that affects sheep and cows and sometimes people, and can cause death. Humans can develop four types of anthax: cutaneous, gastrointestinal, oropharyngeal (posterior part of the oral cavity) and respiratory. The persons from Vadul lui Isac developed cutaneous anthrax, which is considered the lightest form of the disease.
