Over 41% of Moldova’s people stated they live at the poverty line, while another 16% said they permanently lack what they need. At the same time, 2% of the Moldovans consider themselves very rich. A part of them said they are oligarchs. These are the results of a poll conducted by the Association of Sociologists and Demographers of Moldova that was made public on January 23, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The medium group of people who have what they need, but cannot afford luxury things represents 7.2% of the population. 27% of those polled said they always save money in order to buy something more valuable,” said the Association’s head Andrei Dumbraveanu. According to the expert, there is a sharp social pyramid in Moldova according to the stratification of society. In most of the EU countries, the stratification is in the form a rhombus, the medium stratum being the most consistent. “Moldovan society in 2012 is of neo-feudal type as 200 years ago, when there was a small group of very rich people and a group of free peasants on which society was based,” said Andrei Dumbraveanu. The people are mainly concerned about the prices of food products and public utilities. About 1/3 of the people want a higher salary. Over 30% of the Moldovans plan to build a future abroad.
