The Agency for Material Reserves of the Ministry of Internal Affairs will release from the state reserves 5,000 tonnes of fuel oil to JSC Termoelectrica. A draft decision to this effect was approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday, IPN reports.

“Termoelectrica will use the released fuel oil to produce electricity and heat. The enterprise is to transfer to the state budget, within 12 months of the date of entry into force of this decision, the equivalent value of the fuel oil, in the amount of over 102,000 lei.

In December 2022, Termoelectrica received for storage fuel oil intended for state reserves. Given that two of the four tanks of the enterprise are not functional, the fuel oil was fully stored in tanks No. 1 and No. 4, exceeding their capacity by 10%. This situation jeopardizes the proper functioning of the tanks and, in the event of a failure, the entire quantity of fuel oil from the state reserve could be lost, entailing both environmental pollution risks and significant financial losses.

In an effort to identify a solution, following the working meeting with the Prime Minister on March 11, it was decided to burn 5,000 tonnes of fuel oil from the state reserves. “The burning of fuel oil from the state reserves will allow avoiding a possible damage to the reservoir and will ensure the integrity of the quantity of fuel oil remaining in the state reserves. Thus, Termoelectrica will use the fuel oil released from the state reserves for the production of heat and electricity, while the National Agency for Energy Regulatory, when adjusting/updating the charges for 2024, will take into account the value of this fuel,” says the draft decision.
