Only 19 water rescue stations work in Moldova round-the-clock. An analysis conducted by the authorities shows that 165 ponds need to be outfitted with rescue stations so as to ensure the people swim safely. The Government on Wednesday approved the standard regulations concerning the organization of water rescue stations and services, IPN reports.

Daniella Misail-Nichitin, secretary of state at the Ministry of the Interior, said that the personnel of water rescue units annually save about 340 persons from drowning. They also give qualified assistance to about 1,800 persons and inform another 20,000 people about the danger of drowning.

The regulations define the method of organizing water rescue stations and services, the rights, obligations and responsibilities of employees and the measures that need to be taken to protect and save persons who are at risk of drowning.

It was estimated that about 1.4 million lei will be needed for opening and annually maintaining central rescue stations.

As many as 143 cases of drowning on average are recorded in Moldova yearly and about 20 of the victims are children.
