A serious accident at the Cerredo mine in the Spanish city of Asturias has resulted in the deaths of five people and left four others injured, IPN reports.

The cause of the accident is believed to be a firedamp explosion - a buildup of flammable gas, primarily methane, that accumulates in coal mines. The deceased victims were between 32 and 54 years old, according to El País.

The spokesperson for the Government of Asturias, Guillermo Peláez, stated that mining operations were being carried out under an exploitation permit for the use of the mineral in graphite production.

For many years, the Cerredo mine was a cornerstone of southwest Asturias, providing jobs for numerous miners and boosting the local economy through a network of services and businesses in the area.

The last accident at this mine occurred in 2015, when a 40-year-old worker lost his life after a tunnel collapsed.
