It was the first time in the history of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova that the MPs became engaged in a fight. Moldova, which had an impeccable reputation from parliamentary viewpoint, damages its image this way, political analyst Anatol Taranu said when asked by Info-Prim Neo to comment on the incident that happened in the November 8 sitting of the legislature.
Political analyst Viorel Cibotaru believes that this is an unordinary case. “It is a trend towards the escalation of such cases. They show the state of the Communist lawmakers, who come very stressed to Parliament,” he stated, adding that the MPs exceeded a dangerous limit, especially because the incident was broadcast live and the pictures were disseminated by the mass media. “This case plays a negative role in the education process and affects the image and credibility of the political process in Parliament.”
The analyst said the fact that similar incidents happen in other legislative bodies is not an excuse. “The MPs should be an example for the people. By such behavior they devalue the people as well. This is unacceptable. The lawmakers should give an example of civic behavior and good examples from the personal life. Such models of behavior must be criticized,” said Viorel Cibotaru. According to him, the MPs who engage in fights should be penalized for deviant behavior.
Liberal-Democrat Alexandru Cimbriciuc and Communist Iurie Muntean engaged in a brief fight during a speech by Liberal-Democratic group leader Valeriu Strelet, who was defending Prime Minister Vlad Filat on travel spending. The tussle escalated when Strelet said they should call the Minister of Health, who might want to examine the state of health of some Communist representatives.
