The Armenian Diaspora, the Association of Armenian Women and the Union of Armenians of Moldova called upon the Moldovan authorities to recognize the Armenian genocide committed 100 years ago, as a number of European states and not only did it. On April 24, the Armenians from the whole world, including Moldova, commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide committed by the Ottoman Empire.

In a news conference at IPN on April 22, the Armenian Diaspora’s head Venera Gasparean said the pain does not go away even if it is 100 years of those events. The Armenians were left alone to deal with the pain. However, a number of states, such as Canada, Australia, Russia, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Italy, and Austria, recognized the Armenian genocide, while those who committed those crimes didn’t do it and didn’t answer for their deeds.

Venera Gasparean said the day of April 24, when the Armenian genocide was committed, is commemorated by the Armenians from all over the world, who remember those tragic events when almost 2 million Armenians, among whom women, men and children, were killed, while another about 2 million were ill-treated and driven away. “Today the whole Europe mourns together with us. It is our common pain. We call on the President and Parliament of Moldova to recognize the Armenian genocide,” she stated.

The chairman of the Union of Armenians David Davidyan said that Moldova, as a democratic state that chose to follow the path to Europe, will make an important step in this direction if it recognizes the Armenian genocide, as the European Parliament did.

Member of the Diaspora Ara Dzhudzhukyan said the pain caused by those events is passed on to all the generations and each Armenian who is born is marked by this pain. “We want all the peoples and all the states to know this. We call on Moldova to be near us and to recognize the genocide because we are here now, with you, and want you to be near us too,” stated Ara Dzhudzhukyan.

According to the Armenian community, about 10,000 Armenians live currently in Moldova. On April 24, the Cultural Center “Armenia” will host a funeral ceremony dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide.
