The association “Responsible smokers” expressed its dissatisfaction with the current Law on Tobacco Control, especially the provisions that took effect on May 31. In this regard, members of the association staged an event in the center of Chisinau with the aim of showing that the new law is imperfect and the people do not have where to smoke. The participants in the event said the legal act must be modified, IPN reports.
The event was held in front of a café on Bucuresti St in Chisinau. Constantin Dascal, chairman of the association “Responsible smokers”, said there are 4-5 public places, a state institution, a museum and a playground on an area of about 200 meters there. “We wanted to show that even if there are places intended for smokers, this law bans these and makes the visitors of cafes and restaurants to go out and smoke where they are allowed to,” he stated.
One of the participants in the event, who didn’t want to tell his name, said he does not agree with some of the provisions of the new anti-tobacco law. There are no places designed for smokers. The law stipulates that smoking within 10 meters of the entrance to a place is banned. The people do not have where to smoke when there are three public places, a state institution and a playground on a small area.
The organizers said that about 20 persons were to take part in the event, but only three showed up. These presumed that the people didn’t come to the event because they were afraid of being filmed as they will be then fined.
