A couple from Balti were convicted of asphyxiating their newborn child. The 30-year-old man got 12 years, while the woman aged 27 – 12 years and 6 months for deliberate murder, IPN reports.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, in April 2012 the woman gave birth to a healthy boy at home. She and her husband asphyxiated the baby, put him in a polyethylene bag and left him on the balcony. In several days, the woman went to the hospital as she felt sick owing to complications she suffered as a result of the birth given at home. Doctors investigated her and informed the police.
When questioned by the prosecutors, the two didn’t accept their blame.
The prosecutors consider the sentence is too mild and appealed it, asking for 20 and, respectively, 25 years in jail for the two.
