The Ministry of the Environment banned the fishing of herring in the Nistru River, on the section between the barrage of the Dubasari Hydroelectric Plant and Palanca village, during ten days, from May 16 until May 25. The measure is aimed at regulating the fishing of herrings in the period when they migrate en masse, IPN reports.
The herring is a migratory marine species that hibernates at depth, at a great distance from the shore. The shoals of herring stay for a period at the mouth of rivers and then go upstream to reproduce themselves. The migration is the most intense in April and at the start of May.
In the period of migration for reproduction, the herring is fished with special tools, but prohibition intervals are also needed.
