The director of the local office of Bancii de Economii (BEM) in Rascani district, the chief accountant and his assistant and the head of the depository will stand trial for appropriation of funds, IPN reports.
According to the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office, the law enforcement bodies were notified by the administration of the BEM after it discovered the absence of money as a result of an internal audit. The investigators identified a criminal scheme through which the offenders stole 7.7 million lei, US$50,400 and €88,000 from the bank and used it for personal purposes. The scheme has been used since 2007.
The culprits paid back a part of the appropriated money. Some of their property was sequestrated in order to repair the damage caused by them. The four persons are now under arrest. The case will be tried by the Rascani District Court. The four face 8 to 15 years in jail.
Last week, prosecutors brought to justice the head of the BEM branch in Straseni, who is accused of appropriating over 4 million lei from the depository of this branch.
