The international festival of scenic arts BITEI – the Biennale of Eugen Ionescu Theater – was declared cultural event at state level by a Government decision. It was offered the status of International Festival of Scenic Arts, similar to those of the International Opera and Ballet Contest-Festival “Maria Biesu” and the International Music Festival “Martsishor”, IPN reports.
Minister of Culture Monica Babuc said that BITEI is an exceptional cultural event that is at its eleventh edition. “The performance of the team and the uniqueness that accompanies every edition give an incontestable cultural surplus value to Moldova on the international arena,” she stated.
The previous BITEI festivals brought together representatives from over 90 countries, who presented 215 performances. Among the invitees of BITEI were theaters from Japan, Spain, Poland, and Hungary. “This festival has long ago become international. What we do now by adopting such a decision is officially confirm the festival’s status,” said Monica Babuc.
The minister voiced hope that the new status will bring BITEI greater financing from the state budget. Money for organizing the event has been allocated from the state budget since 2008, but the amounts are lower than the needs.
