The Constitutional Court regrets the vehement attacks on it and condemns the political pressure to which it has been subject the past few days. In a press release, the Court says any influence or interference on the part of the national or any foreign political class is inadmissible and should be treated as an attack on the Constitution, IPN reports.
“In a state strengthened based on the values of democracy and preeminence of the law where a Constitutional Court works, the judgements and decisions of this should be treated appropriately given the exclusive role to interpret the fundamental law played by the Court. The Constitutional Court is the only authority that is independent from any other authority and that obeys only the Constitution,” runs the press release.
The CC also said the Court’s judges are irremovable throughout their tenure and their interpretations have a constitutional force. No political goal can justify the disregard and attacks on the only legitimate authority of constitutional jurisdiction and the ignoring of the constitutional values of preeminence of the law and democracy. “Those who demand to dissolve the Court are actually enemies of democracy in the Republic of Moldova,” said the Court, noting its argued decisions will be soon published and will be later translated and made available to the public.
Over 80 nongovernmental organizations that form the National Platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum urged the Constitutional Court to urgently reverse its decisions adopted during June 7-9 and “reinstate legality”. In a public statement issued today, the NGOs call for all constitutional judges to resign, so as to restore confidence in the Constitutional Court and to stabilize the situation in the country.
