CEC registers initiative group for referendum initiated by PSD

The Central Election Commission (CEC) Friday registered the initiative group for holding a national referendum on Moldova joining the treaties on the creation of the Eurasian Economic Community and of a common customs area and the Customs Union, Info-Prim Neo reports. “If at least 200,000 signatures are collected, we will adopt a decision that will be submitted to Parliament for examination. There will be three possible results: the legislative body will set the date of the plebiscite, will approve the legislative initiative, but will not call a referendum, or will not set a date of the referendum,” said the CEC chairman Iurie Ciocan. The leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Victor Selin, who heads the initiative group, said that all the legal provisions concerning the formulation of documents were respected. “The group’s decision on the entry into the Russia-Belarus-Kazakhstan Customs Union derives from the people’s necessity to have decent living conditions and from the economic entities’ necessity to develop their businesses and ensure the country’s economic prosperity,” he stated. The referendum may take place on November 18. The initiators have three months to collect the necessary 200,000 signatures.
