A girl aged three was rushed to the hospital in a serious condition after catching fire from a container with diesel fuel near which she was playing with matches. She was admitted to the intensive care section of the Donduseni District Hospital with burns on the face, thorax and hands. During less than two weeks, owing to the diesel fuel that can be found in most of the homes as it is used to start fire in the stove, three children younger than five were hospitalized and several more children suffered serious poisoning.

This case happened in Arionesti village of Donduseni district. The parents left the girl alone in the room. The head of the Surgery Section of the Donduseni District Hospital Alexei Chira has told IPN that the girl is being monitored and may need an operation. He warned the parents to be very careful and not to leave the children of an early age unsupervised, at least for a moment. The burns can leave scars for life.

All the containers with inflammable substances must be kept in places that are inaccessible to children. Also, the children must not have access to matches and other items that can endanger their lives.

Information about how to protect the child in different situations is available at www.parinti.md and can be also found out by following the information campaigns centering on the prevention of accidents involving children carried out within the REPEMOL (Regionalization of Pediatric Emergency and Intensive Care Service in Moldova) Project, which is financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and implemented by the Foundation of the Center for Health Policies and Services.
