The Chisinau District Electoral Council, following a complaint filed by the Party of Socialists, requested the court of law to determine if the candidate of the National Unity Party Constantin Codreanu violated or not Article 52 (al. 3) of the Election Code, which bans electoral contenders from engaging persons who are not citizens of the Republic of Moldova in electoral agitation in any form.
Contacted by IPN, secretary of the Electoral Council Vitalie Miron said the Party of Socialists asked to also annul the registration of the National Unity Party’s candidate as an election runner, but the request was rejected.
In a news conference on May 17, Constantin Codreanu said he didn’t break the law when he posted pictures of him and of the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis and persons who formed part of the U.S. President Donald Trump’s staff near him on his Facebook page as this is not electoral agitation.
The candidate said the Socialists manipulate, being helped in these efforts by the authorities, and aim to exclude him from the electoral race on the last 100 meters.
