The Kiev Appeals Court decided to annul the ordinary court’s decision to extradite Veaceslav Platon from Ukraine to Moldova, IPN reports.
Chief of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office Viorel Morari told the press that the Ukrainian side hasn’t yet informed them about this decision by official ways. The decision was presented in court as a copy authenticated by the defense.
“Firstly, I want to note that this is not a definitive decision. Secondly, if the sentence was pronounced by the Kiev Appeals Court, the decision of the first court was quashed and the case is to be retried. We do not know the reasons for the annulment as the presented copies do not contain reasons, but only the ordinance,” stated the prosecutor.
The Prosecutor’s Office will react when it is notified officially by the competent bodies of Ukraine. Asked by journalists about the statements of the lawyers for Platon, who said that their client must be present in the court in Kiev when a new judgment is passed, Morari said they received no such request from the competent bodies of Ukraine.
“If there was a decision not to extradite or to ban the extradition, theoretically we should set him free. There is no precedent and I cannot say how we would act. We will study the international treaties to which we are a party and the national legislation and the legislation of Ukraine,” stated Viorel Morari.
Veaceslav Platon is investigated for swindle and money laundering that caused damage of over 800 million lei to Banca de Economii. The businessman, who was extradited from Ukraine this July, pleads not guilty.
