The head of the Surgical Gynecology Section of the Mother and Child Institute faces up to three years in jail for violating the rules of providing medical assistance and, consequently, causing serious injury to a female patient. The criminal case was sent to court, IPN reports.

According to prosecutors, in January 2012 the female doctor caused ureteral injury to the woman while operating her. Without prescribing treatment to her, the doctor discharged her in several days. As a result, the woman remained without a kidney. The investigation showed that the extirpation of the kidney was determined by the lack of diagnosis of the ureteral injury and administration of late treatment to the patient. This could have been avoided if the woman’s state of health had been assessed on time and this had received appropriate treatment.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the prosecutors in 2017 initiated 63 criminal cases against doctors over malpractice, as opposed to 49 cases in 2016.
