A letter signed by the former head of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, Veronica Dragalin, reveals alleged links between high-ranking politicians and the justice reform process. The letter was read at a meeting of the Superior Council of Magistracy by former CNA deputy director Cristina Ciubotaru. The presidency accuses Dragalin of spreading falsehoods, IPN reports.

Veronica Dragalin reported that on January 11, 2025, she was invited to a meeting with President Maia Sandu, where she was told that her tenure as head of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office had become a danger to state security because the Prosecutor's Office had not prevented the negative results of the presidential elections of October and November 2024.

"Among other things, Madam President invoked the fact that (she) considers that I personally opposed the vetting procedure, including by initiating criminal proceedings against members of the vetting commissions," Dragalin said.

Likewise, in that email, Veronica Dragalin wrote that during 2024, she was approached, by Prime Minister Dorin Recean and President Maia Sandu, regarding the vetting procedure regarding the prosecutors of the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office, and that the two had requested the list of prosecutors, whom she considers to be of integrity and who, in her view, should promote vetting.

The Presidency has reacted to Dagalin's allegations in her letter, saying it is regrettable that the former anti-corruption chief is making false accusations about her talks with the President. The head of state has repeatedly spoken about the need for the anti-corruption prosecutor's office, as well as the entire justice system, to cleanse itself of corruption and become a strong, independent system that people can trust, the presidency's commentary added.

In its reaction, the government said it would not comment further on the statements made by the Presidency after the letter published by Veronica Dragalin.
