The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office announced that the deputy chief accountant and the treasury head of the Rascani branch of Banca de Economii (Savings Bank) were sentenced to five years and four months in jail for appropriation. The court also ordered that the culprits pay appropriate damages, IPN reports.

The criminal case was started following a notification from the administration of Banca de Economii, which detected the absence of cash as a result of an internal audit.

The deputy chief accountant and the treasury head were found guilty of stealing 7.7 million lei, over US$50,000 and over €88,000 from the bank for personal use, together with the director and chief accountant of the branch.

An insignificant part of the money was returned during the investigation. Prosecutors sequestrated property and businesses of the culprits for recovering damages. They intend to appeal the decision of the Rascani Court and to demand a harsher punishment. The same court is to examine the criminal case started against the chief accountant and director of the branch.
