The influence of the warm sector, the forecast weak winds and fog on January 3 and 4 will contribute to the accumulation of air pollutants, the Environment Agency has warned. In a press release, the institution says the air quality indexes registered at the automatic traffic recorder station met the set norms. But the concentration of particulate matter (PM10) exceeded the reference limit of 50 µg/mᶾ, with the average daily being 100.3 µg/mᶾ to 140.68 µg/mᶾ, IPN reports.
Road traffic remains the main source of pollution in urban and rural areas. The motor vehicles with internal combustion engines significantly pollute the air by discharging carbon dioxide that is known as one of the causes of the greenhouse effect. The fossil fuels used to heat the homes are another source of pollution. Given the energy and gas crisis, the population uses different alternative sources of fuels, such as crude oil, rubber, plastic and even used tires.
“Even if a high air pollution level has been recoded these days, we call on the citizens to be calm. It is a worrisome, not alarming situation. It is normal to have a lower air quality in the country’s capital city where a significant part of the population is concentrated. The state authorities and each inhabitant should make joint efforts to reduce emissions so as to further protect human health and the environment,” noted the Environment Agency.
The air pollution level in the municipality of Chisinau remained at a high level during the last few days of 2022. The average daily in the period was 2.8 times higher for PM10 air pollutants.
