The governments of Moldova and Ukraine approved an agreement on the implementation of the Espoo Convention. The document, signed in Odessa in August, regulates the environmental impact assessment and strengthens Moldovan-Ukrainian cooperation in defense of common ecosystems, IPN reports.
According to the Environment Ministry, the Espoo Convention is aimed at preventing and minimizing negative environmental impacts through impact assessment at the project planning stage. The convention also promotes the exchange of information between states in order to monitor actions with negative environmental impacts.
A joint commission is to be set up between Moldova and Ukraine. The Commission will coordinate environmental assessments for activities affecting both countries, ensure transparency by publishing relevant information and organize public consultations. It will also propose concrete solutions to reduce and prevent negative environmental impacts.
"This agreement is an important step towards sustainable development and protection of natural resources in the cross-border region. Its implementation will contribute to the reduction of environmental risks and the development of closer bilateral relations between Moldova and Ukraine", said the Environment Ministry.
