The governor of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) announced that the euro could become the reference currency of the central bank. When presenting the inflation report, Anca Dragu explained that this would be a useful measure for intervention on the currency market, in setting the exchange rate and in storing foreign exchange reserves, IPN reports.

According to the head of the NBM, the possibility of switching from the US dollar to the euro is due to the higher volume of trade of the Republic of Moldova with the European Union. Over 65% of Moldova’s foreign trade is carried out with European states.

"This process will benefit both the population and the business community in the country, while strengthening financial stability and underlining the Republic of Moldova’s commitment to continue on the path of European integration," said Dragu, assuring that more details in this regard will be made known by the end of this year.
