The Head of the European Union Delegation to Moldova Dirk Schuebel does not see a contradiction in the fact that Moldova marks both Europe Day and the Day of Victory in the Second World War on May 9.
Asked by Info-Prim Neo to say why the events related to Europe Day were scheduled for May 7 not May 9, when this holiday is celebrated officially, the European official denied that this way they avoided overlapping the two holidays. The question was put following assertions that the separation of the two holidays was imposed by the Communist administration.
“Personally, I consider that there is no contradiction. I highly respect the day of May 9 when the people celebrate the official end of World War II. I'm from Germany and I have a number of reasons to observe this day. The persons who celebrate the liberation from fascism on May 9 do not object to celebrating Europe Day the same day, given the present and future situation, and we thus reached a consensus,” said Dirk Schuebel.
“In fact, we chose to cerebrate Europe Day on May 7 in order to allow the people to celebrate throughout the day and rest and prepare for the workday. They would not have benefited from this advantage if we had chosen May 9. I would like to reiterate that I see no contradiction in this respect. Both of the events should be celebrated. As a representative of the European Union, I'm in a position to promote the European values. At the same time, we respect the other persons who celebrate their event.”
In the context of the latest political events in Moldova, including the defections from a party of the ruling alliance, Dirk Schuebel said he dose not think that they may negatively influence the relations with the EU. “But we want the Government of Moldova to remain intact so that we maintain the cooperation relations, especially now before the meeting of the Cooperation Council that will take place in Brussels on May 5,” said the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova.
