A new suspect was arrested in the case concerning Penitentiary No. 5 of Cahul. This is the former chief of Penitentiary No. 1 of Taraclia. This, as the other two suspects arrested earlier, is suspected of traffic of influence, IPN reports.

According to the National Anticorruption Center, last week the ex-head of Penitentiary No. 5 of Cahul and a lawyer were arrested on passive corruption charges. The two are investigated for asking for €16,000 and US$13,300 from the family of a criminal who was sentenced to 18 years in jail.

The prosecutors established that in 2014-2016, the suspects asked for money from the detainee’s mother for influencing functionaries of the Department of Penitentiary Institutions and the judge so that this was set free before time. According to the denouncer, the two said they can obtain a certificate showing that the convict suffers from a serious disease from the special medical commission of the Department and the prisoner would be released before time based on this.

The investigation goes on to identify all the persons involved in this case.
