Activist Fiodor Ghelici, who has a diplomatic passport, must be set free immediately, while the Supreme Council of Magistrates must come together to start disciplinary proceedings against the judges who put the activist under arrest, former security minister Anatol Plugaru said in a news conference at IPN.
Anatol Plugaru said there are no examples in the world when the holder of a diplomatic passport is held in jail. The owners of diplomatic passports cannot be jailed even if they committed something. Thus, Moldova’s legal system shows that they serve the interests of political leaders, while the prosecution officers who started a criminal case against Fiodor Ghelici committed an offense.
The former security minister said the activist was arrested after he was appointed as Moldova’s ambassador to the International Organization for Economic Development that is under the UN’s aegis. Given that he was appointed recently, the diplomatic passport hasn’t yet reached Fiodor Ghelici, but there are official documents showing that the passport was issued. The administration of the International Organization for Economic Development, which is based in the U.S., sent the activist’s diplomatic passport to Moldova to show that he is the organization’s ambassador.
Anatol Plugaru said that he came into possession of information contained in the criminal case started against Fiodor Ghelici. The accusations of traffic of influence against the activist are not substantiated. Thus, the case is political in character and was started by order of the leader of the PLDM Vlad Filat, who is dissatisfied with the fact that the post of ambassador was occupied by Fiodor Ghelici, not a man of his.
The chairman of the Public Association “Moldova mea” Fiodor Ghelici was arrested on October 11 on suspicion of trafficking in persons. A warrant for the activist’s arrest was issued for 30 days.
