The first bilateral political consultations between the Republic of Moldova and the People's Republic of China in the last 12 years took place in the Chinese capital Beijing. The Foreign Ministry says the talks focused on intensifying cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and China in key areas such as politics and diplomacy, economy, law, culture, social-humanitarian, consular, as well as mutual support in international organizations, IPN reports.

Delegations to the fifth round of the Moldovan-Chinese political consultations were led by State Secretary Sergiu Mihov and his Chinese counterpart Liu Bin. The two officials underlined the importance of deepening and strengthening dialogue between the two countries in areas of mutual interest. It was also agreed that the next session of the Intergovernmental Joint Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation will be organized in 2025.

"In the context of mutual support for sovereignty and territorial integrity, Sergiu Mihov reaffirmed Moldova's commitment to the "One China" principle, while Liu Bin emphasized China's support for Moldova's territorial integrity," the MFA said.

The Secretary of State also reiterated Moldova's interest in expanding Moldovan-Chinese cooperation in the trade-economic and investment fields, given China's expertise in attracting foreign investment and modernizing the economy. China's success in the development of the renewable energy sector, information technologies and digitalization of the economy and society was also highlighted.

During the talks, both sides expressed openness to further explore cooperation opportunities within the framework of the Belt and Road economic initiative, which offers important opportunities for the implementation of economic connectivity projects and basic infrastructure development.

Other topics discussed included the European aspirations of the Republic of Moldova, the security situation in the region, including the war in Ukraine, the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, as well as political developments in South East Asia and the Pacific.

Finally, an invitation was extended to hold the next round of inter-ministerial political consultations in Chisinau next year, at a mutually convenient time.
