The former head of the Administrative Division of the Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC) Terentie Cherdivara was sentenced to seven years in jail for passive corruption. He will also have to pay a fine of 20,000 lei and will be unable to hold public posts for a three-year period, IPN reports.

According to a communiqué from the Prosecutor General’s Office, the decision was passed by the Chisinau Court of Appeals, which accepted the prosecutor’s appeal. On January 21, 2011, the culprit was caught in the act of taking 110,000 lei from the representative of a company for not initiating inspections to determine the quality of goods and the volume of services provided as a result of signing a procurement contract with the BCC.

On April 27, 2011, the Centru district court sentenced the civil servant to four years behind bars, but put him on probation for a period of three years, changing the accusation from passive corruption into traffic of influence. The prosecutors challenged the decision of the first court. But the Chisinau Court of Appeals’ decision can be also appealed.

The former BCC chairman is investigated by the National Anticorruption Center in a separate case.
