Admirers, friends, colleagues and relatives of poet Anatol Codru came to bid farewell to him at the National Opera House in Chisinau. God endowed Anatol Codru with great talent. He was a real friend and a determined person, while his soul reacted to every suffering and joy, which were later depicted in his poems, said those who admired him.
“Only a honest man could write poems that bring you closer to God,” said Moldova's emeritus artist Ninela Caranfil. “Anatol Codru loved the people and was always ready to help them. His motto in life was: “Be honest and Dignified”.”
Anatol Codru has headed the Filmmakers' Union during ten years. The poet's death for the filmmakers is an irrecoverable loss, said the Union's current head Eugen Sobor. “We lost a remarkable director. In documentaries, Anatol Codru combined the poetic metaphor and the realities of life,” he said, adding Anatol Codru made over 30 documentaries.
Valeriu Sandu, mayor of Malovata-Noua village, where Anatol Codru was born, said he has always felt a close connection between the residents and the poet. “Anatol Codru was always joyful when he was in his native village and was proud that he was born there,” said the mayor.
Vitalie Oprea, the head of “Anatol Codru” high school in Malovata-Noua, said the poet was a guest of honor for the villagers, mainly for the children. “The children loved Anatol Codru very much. They were his friends. A literary club was founded at the high school, where the children study the poet's works,” he said. Anatol Codru contributed to the development of the village's library by donating books.
Anatol Codru was born in 1936. He was a member of honor of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. He won the National Prize for Youth, the Top Prize of the International Film Festival in Ostrove, Czechoslovakia, and other awards.
The poet died on August 17, 2010.
