Government approves bill on specialized prosecutor’s offices

The Cabinet approved the draft law on the organization and functioning of specialized prosecutor’s offices, IPN reports.

The document provides for the institution of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office and the Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases and aims to create an independent, equitable, efficient and transparent justice system.

Under the bill, the specialized prosecutor’s offices will have a separate budget and a distinct organogram with special powers. These will be based in the municipality of Chisinau and will have local offices and representatives offices that will be approved by the Prosecutor General’s Office at the suggestion of the chief prosecutor of the specialized prosecutor’s office, with the consent of the Supreme Council of Prosecutors.

In accordance with the organogram, there will be at most 50 prosecutors, 40 consultants to prosecutors, 31 prosecution and investigation officers, 10 specialists and 7 employees of the technical and administrative personnel. The prosecutors of specialized prosecutor’s offices will be independent and will be directed by a chief prosecutor helped by one or more deputies.

The specialized prosecutor’s offices are set up in accordance with the strategy for reforming the justice sector for 2011-2016 and the prosecution service reformation conception. The measure is also stipulated in the Moldova – EU Association Agreement.

The document is to be examined by Parliament.
