Prime Minister Dorin Recean said that the Government will offer assistance to Moldovan entrepreneurs who export products to the United States. The statement comes after the U.S. decided to impose tariffs on products imported from 70 countries. For Moldovan products, the announced customs duty is 31 percent, IPN reports.

According to Dorin Recean, the United States’ decision affects about 2.5% of the foreign trade of the Republic of Moldova.

"We understand the concern of our producers who have worked constantly to have access to the U.S. market and the Government will intervene to help those entrepreneurs to maintain their competitiveness," Premier Recean said at a press conference.

He noted that the Republic of Moldova remains firmly committed to a strategic partnership with the United States.

"It is a partnership of over 30 years and we are firmly convinced that we will be able to continue and to meet the set objectives," said the official.

During a speech at the White House on Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the introduction of radical new tariffs for a wide range of products and countries. The measure is described by him as "a declaration of economic independence", which targets both economic rivals and traditional allies of the U.S.

The new tariffs will be applied in two stages. On April 5, a basic tariff of 10% for most of the world's economies comes into force, and on April 9 – increased tariffs for countries considered "the biggest criminals" in international trade.
