The Republic of Moldova will cooperate with other states to stop counterfeiting of currency on the territory of the country and internationally. A national central office will be created in Chisinau, which will work with specialists from issuing institutions and police authorities in order to prevent and sanction counterfeiting. Parliament ratified the agreement to join the International Convention for the Suppression of Counterfeiting, IPN reports.
By joining the Convention, Moldova aligns itself with international efforts to counter counterfeiting. According to the provisions of the Convention, any activity of fraudulent manufacture or modification of currency or putting into circulation will be classified as crimes. This also refers to bringing into the country, receiving or obtaining counterfeit currency.
At the same time, an international central office will work in close cooperation with the offices of other countries and will centralize information in order to facilitate the investigation, prevention and sanctioning of forgeries.
The Convention for the Suppression of Counterfeiting is the only multilateral international legal instrument, which was signed on April 20, 1929 in Geneva.
