Latvia reaffirms its support for Moldova’s European path

Latvia reaffirms its support for the European path of the Republic of Moldova. During an official visit to Chisinau on Monday, Latvian Minister of Justice Inese Lībiņa-Egnere said that the authorities of each country have the duty to defend democracy, and Moldova does this exemplarily. The official encouraged the Moldovan authorities to continue their journey with the same determination, IPN reports.

In a bilateral meeting, Minister of Justice of the Republic of Moldova Veronica Mihailov-Moraru and Inese Lībiņa-Egnere discussed the progress made by the country in the process of joining the European Union, as well as bilateral cooperation in the field of justice.

After the discussions, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru said that Latvia as a reliable partner in the European path of the Republic of Moldova. Cooperation between the two ministries has developed considerably in recent years. Among the main areas of cooperation are the justice sector reform, security, anticorruption. Moldova received legal assistance from Latvia in civil and criminal matters.

Veronica Mihailov-Moraru also said that the Republic of Moldova is going through a series of transformations and the Ministry of Justice is fully involved in bilateral screening. At the stage of harmonization of the national legislation with that of the European Union, the Ministry of Justice is responsible for transposing numerous European documents in such areas as justice, the fight against corruption, and human rights. “Given the complexity of these tasks and the growing volume of activities, the support of the development partners and experts is essential for our EU pre-accession journey. We are very grateful to our counterparts who offered to provide expertise in the harmonization of legislation, including in the European integration process,” said the Moldovan official.

For her part, the Latvian minister appreciated the friendly relationship between the two countries and supported the idea of ensuring practical and theoretical cooperation in both directions. “Both Latvia and the entire European Union are facing challenges coming from Russia and a system of law and democracy is essential to respond to these threats,” said Inese Lībiņa-Egnere.

The sides agreed to work together to support the digitization of justice in the Republic of Moldova, modernization of the probation service, management of the penitentiary system, and harmonization of the national legislation with the EU acquis.

Inese Lībiņa-Egnere is paying a two-day visit to the Republic of Moldova at the invitation of her Moldovan counterpart Veronica Mihailov-Moraru.
