Leader of Chechen criminal group in Moldova arrested

The leader of the Chechen criminal group in Moldova Ibraghimov Movsar Muslim, alias Mavsar, was arrested in Chisinau on August 11, the National Investigations Inspectorate said, quoted by IPN.

Mavsar, 48, is a native of the Chechen Republic. He settled in Chisinau in 1986. In 1992 he became a citizen of Moldova with the domicile in Chisinau municipality. He is the former son-in-law of the criminal leader Valerian Rotari, alias Zelionyi.

In 1992 – 2002, Movsar Ibraghimov Muslim had been under investigation after he was caught extorting US$80,000 from a businessman together with a number of acolytes. He was tried three times for theft and illegal possession of firearms. During investigations, it was established that Mavsar financially supported the separatist Chechen movement, being also one of the unofficial Chechen leaders who settled in Moldova.

In 2004, the Chisinau Appeals Court sentenced him to seven years behind bars. The sentence was passed in his absence.
