Legislation on prevention of smuggling will be modified

The criminal and administrative legislation on the prevention and combating of smuggling of goods will be amended. Such a decision was taken by the Supreme Security Council at its Thursday’s meeting, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the presidential press service. President Vladimir Voronin expressed concern, stressing that the institutions entrusted with the prevention and combating of smuggling of goods have a negligent and irresponsible attitude in their work. The large volume of contraband and the lack of an efficient legal framework for punishing the persons to blame points to the existence of group interests, including of employees of the law enforcement and inspection bodies that work in collusion with smugglers, the president said. Under the decision by the Supreme Security Council, until the seventeenth Parliament stats work, a special working group will formulate and submit proposals for modifying the criminal and administrative legislation on the prevention and combating of smuggling of goods. The proposals will also envision a stricter delimitation of the powers and responsibilities of the law enforcement and inspection bodies.
