The Ministry of Justice is proposing Parliament to initiate as soon as possible the procedure of selecting members on the Council for Preventing and Eliminating Discrimination and Ensuring Equality so that it can be formed until the end of this year and become functional starting 1 January 2013, when all the regulations necessary for its work will also have been adopted. 1 January 2013 is also the date when the Law on Ensuring Equality, also known as the Antidiscrimination Law, enters in effect. The Council has been conceived as the body that will enforce this Law by ensuring, among other measures, protection against discrimination. The Bill on the Equality Commission and the proposed amendments to the relevant legislation are available on the MoJ's website. The Parliament's Legal Affairs Commission on Wednesday unsuccessfully attempted to appoint the members of a special commission to select candidates for the Equality Council. After the proposal was made that every parliamentary group should delegate a member to the commission, the Communist MPs requested more time to discuss this within the group.
