The public association “Moldova mea” and the Center for Scoliosis Correction of the Mother and Child Institute call upon the people to contribute money for saving children who suffer from serious forms of scoliosis and need surgery immediately. In a news conference at IPN, the association’s head Fiodor Ghelici and surgeon Nicolae Savga said costly implants are needed for correcting the backbone of children, but the state does not help the families to cover these costs.

In 2013, “Moldova mea” launched a fundraising campaign. Fiodor Ghelici said he sought help from all the political parties and from different associations and state bodies, but the collected amounts are not enough. He proposed a number of institutions to collect funds through mobile phone networks, but nobody answered this call so far. Those who want to donate money for children who need surgery can take this directly to the families. The contacts can be found out at “Moldova mea”.

Nicolai Savga stated that the operations for scoliosis do not put right an esthetic defect, as many consider. “The deformation of the backbone leads to more difficult deformations of internal organs. The lungs and the cardiovascular system are affected. The changes that occur in the body are irreversible,” said the doctor, noting that the performed surgeries determine not only the patient’s quality of life, but also the length of his life.

According to Nicolai Savga, fundraising is not a solution for fighting this disease because new cases of scoliosis appear annually. Only a National Screening and Recovery Program can change the situation.

Currently, at least 30 children need emergency implants for backbone correction. There are about 10,000 people who suffer from different forms of scoliosis in Moldova.
