Moldova on 69th spot in Human Freedom Index

The Republic of Moldova ranks 69th out of 159 states in the Human Freedom Index that presents the state of human freedom in the world based on a broad measure that encompasses personal, civil, and economic freedom. The report is co-published by the Cato Institute, the Fraser Institute, and the Liberales Institut. Moldova has a score of 6.99 on a scale of 10. As regards freedom to trade internationally, Moldova comes 99th, IPN reports.

As to freedom of the press and freedom of expression, Moldova has 6.53 of 10. The score is affected by the existence of policies that influence the media and by press control.

Moldova has the lowest score for rule of law, of 4.05. As a sub point of this chapter, independence of justice scored only 1.77, impartiality of courts of law – 2.29, reliability of the police – 3.48, while protection of property rights – 3.72.

In the general rankings, Namibia occupies the same position as Moldova. Moldova’s neighboring states Romania and Ukraine rank 30th and 111th respectively. Hong-Kong heads the rankings, while Libya comes last.

Moldova had the best position in 2008 – 63rd, while the worst result was witnessed in 2010 and 2013 - 77th.
