UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova Dafina Gherceva said the authorities will manage to bring Moldova on the path to prosperity only if they join forces with the population so as to ensure gender quality. She made related statements in the third Public Forum “Partnership for an Inclusive and Prosperous Moldova – Women Count!” that was organized with support from the UN Woman Moldova, IPN reports.
“We must make effort to overcome any type of inequality. It is very important to really ensure gender equality in Moldova and make sure that the female population that constitutes 52% is appropriately represented. The population is the most valuable resource of any country and, in the case of the Republic of Moldova, a good investment in women will also ensure prosperity in a number of areas,” stated the UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova.
Dafina Gherceva noted that it’s time to shift from discussions to action and the United Nations in Moldova is ready to cooperate so as to ensure better representation of women in the public life.
In the forum, the women MPs met face to face with women from different groups such as Roma women, women infected with HIV, victims of violence, women entrepreneurs, etc. Liberal MPs Alina Zotea said the discussions with the participating women made her realize that Moldova faces serious problems that should be dealt with immediately. “I’m absolutely convinced that the women have the capacity, power and intelligence needed to succeed not only in business, but also in politics. We are a force and we cannot be neglected,” she stated.
Socialist MP Marina Radvan expressed her conviction that a number of legislative initiatives will be put forward as a result of these discussions. She said that the Party of Socialists always supported the initiatives aimed at improving the situation in society and she, as an MP, will do her best for the issues discussed in the forum to reach Parliament and be solved.
