Moldovan stomatology school marks 50 years of existence

“Our objective was and remains to prepare highly-qualified specialists,” Ion Ababii, the rector of the State University of Medicine and Pharmaceutics “N.Testemitanu”, said at a festive meeting held to celebrate 50 years of the foundation of the University’s stomatology faculty and the Association of Dental Surgeons of Moldova, Info- Prim Neo. Ion Ababii said that over 4,000 dentists have been trained during these years. 85% of them became Doctors of Medicine, 10 of whom Habilitate Doctors. The names and works of such graduates as Gheorghe Tabarna, Arsenie Gutanu, Valentin Topala, Gheorghe Nicolau, Sofia Sarbu and others are well known in the country and abroad. As many as 800 Moldovan young people study at the faculty at present. Students from Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Turkey, Jordan, Sudan, Syria and other countries have been admitted to the faculty since1989. The faculty cooperates with similar departments from a number of states, exchanges experience and specialists, publishes studies and articles in scientific journals (about 4,000 articles). Ion Lupan, the president of the Association of Dental Surgeons, said that over 600 dentists’ offices and stomatology sections work in Moldova as part of public medical institutions. About 400 private dentists’ offices have been opened during the last few years. According to him, the Moldovan stomatology made progress in implementing modern dental treatment methods and technologies, but there is yet a lot of work to do, especially in the rural areas.
