Moldova’s Consul General in Istanbul Veaceslav Filip was arrested by anticorruption prosecutors and placed in the remand prison of the National Anticorruption Center for 72 hours on corruption charges.

Contacted by IPN, acting Prosecutor General Eduard Harunjen said the diplomat is investigated as a suspect and anticorruption prosecutors carry out searches at the council’s home and at other addresses.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration issued a press release saying they took notice of the arrest of Veaceslav Filip. “Mister Filip has worked in the diplomatic service since July 15, 1993 and no irregularities were identified in his professional activity in the period. He had a good performance and was a dedicated colleague. In this connection, we consider an appeal should be made to the law enforcement agencies, the press and the public to respect the presumption of innocence of the arrested person, which is stipulated in the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova,” it is said in the press release.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration noted it will cooperate with the investigation bodies and will provide all the necessary information so that this case is clarified.
