More persons convicted in 1m lei contraband case

The Stefan Voda court passed new sentences in the case of the 1 million lei contraband. Two persons were put on probation for a year. The sentence can be appealed to a higher court, Info-Prim Neo report, quotuing the Prosecutor General’s Office. Late in June, the head of the group involved in the April contraband case in Stefan-Voda was given a two-year suspended sentence. Under the judgment passed by the Buiucani district court, the contraband goods worth almost 1 million lei were confiscated. On April 12, officers of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office arrested a group of nine persons on suspicion that they smuggled consumer goods from Ukraine. The group included persons from Chisinau, Calarasi, Palanca and Tudora. Among them was a former employee of the Ministry of the Interior and a customs officer. Most of the culprits have a criminal record. They had been earlier tried for theft, falsification of documents, acts of hooliganism, smuggling and corruption. The rest of the members are still being investigated.
