About 200 items from the National Library letters’ collection, offering insights into the economic, social, political and cultural life of Tzarist Bessarabia between 1812-1918, have been restored and exhibited.
Elena Pintilei, director of the National Library, said the project is of major importance for our national heritage, because two years ago, it was impossible to display or make the documents available for research. The restored historical documents contain important information from about 19th century Bessarabia under Tzarist occupation. The documents are to be researched by historians, stated Elena Pintilii.
The head librarian also said that the institution owns a suitable warehouse for the preservation of the documentary heritage. “We will certainly use the knowledge gained during the project for further projects at the National Library,” stated Elena Pintilii.
The letters have been restored as part of a project financed by the US Embassy, through the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Conservation.
Jos Geraghty, cultural attaché of the US Embassy in Moldova, noted that the restored letters represent a unique collection of Bessarabian history. One of the project’s advantages is that it reveals more about Moldova, its cultural heritage, the historical events and the people, said Jos Geraghty.
The admission-free exhibition will run until December 30.
