National squad sportspersons to benefit from scholarships

Sixty-three national team athletes will be provided with scholarships that will vary between 1,500 and 10,000 lei. The Government approved a relevant draft decision “with the aim of efficiently preparing the sportspersons that will form part of the Olympic squad and for implementing the program aimed at preparing the professional athletes for the 30th summer Olympic Games that will be held in London in 2012,” Info-Prim Neo reports. The regulations concerning the provision of sports scholarships were formulated by the Sports Agency. “The professional athletes that practice such Olympic sports as wrestling, boxing, athletics, cycling and weightlifting need richer food. The sport scholarship is their only source of existence that covers the costs of daily food, vitamins and other necessities,” said Andrei Pogurschi, the director general of the Sports Agency. The scholarships will be distributed according to the results obtained and positions taken by the national squad sportspersons at European and world championships and at the Olympics and Paralympics Games and according to the progress made in the last few years.
