The demographic crisis Moldova copes with may worsen in case homosexuality is legalized. Paul Cameron, a doctor of sociology and the chairman of the Family Research Institute from Colorado tried to prove this idea. He was invited to Moldova by the Coalition for the Defense of Family and Morality joining some 25 NGOs. According to him, the situation in Moldova is alarming since the statistics show that a Moldovan woman has only 1.3 children on average, and this could downsize the population two-fold in 35 years. He says it's not homosexuality that leads to declining birth rates, but the possible grant of certain privileges or statuses to the people sharing this orientation. Vitalie Marian, the vice chairman of the Coalition says “the association has noting against the homosexuals leading the life they want.” He stands up against legalizing homosexuality, against their parades “which target getting equal rights with other citizens.” Reverend Vasile Ciobanu, a cultural advisor with the Moldovan Orthodox Church, says the Church condemns the wrong-doing represented by homosexuality, insisting that the family should be made up from a man and a woman, in order to be able to perpetuate the nation. The Coalition asks for ousting the term “sexual orientation” from the draft Law on countering discrimination, Info-Prim Neo reports.
