Nine in ten cases of diabetes can be prevented by keeping weight under control

30 minutes of moderate exercises a day are associated with a reduction in weight of 5-10%. Among persons with ideal weight, the exercises determine a 58% reduction in the risk of diabetes. The data were presented by the Ministry of Health on the occasion of the World Diabetes Day whose slogan this year is “Control your Diabetes”, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Doctors warn that sugar diabetes can be controlled by obeying certain elementary rules. Nine in ten cases of diabetes can be prevented by keeping weight under control, performing regular physical exercises, following a healthy diet and not smoking.
Diabetes reduces life expectancy by 5-10 years, being one of the major causes of premature death worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, a person dies from diabetes every eight seconds. There are more than 230 million people with diabetes in the world, but the real number is much higher as many persons affected have not been identified.
Almost 50% of the persons who have type 2 diabetes do not know that they are sick as the disease does not yet manifest itself. An estimated 350 million people will have diabetes worldwide in 2030.
In Moldova there are more than 60,000 persons suffering from diabetes, 360 of whom are children. In 20% of the cases, the persons have type 1 diabetes that must be treated with insulin.
On the occasion of the World Diabetes Day marked on November 14, the Ministry of Health urges the people to do medical examinations in order to detect diabetes early. Doctors say preventing diabetes is the best treatment.
