The owner of the sheepfold located near Cosernita village of Floresti district Tudor Dogotari, where wolves tore up seven sheep, while another 40 suffocated, has run the pen for eight years, but said this happened to him for the first time even if wolves appeared at the sheepfolds nearby.

Contacted by IPN, the sheep pen owner said he was called by the shepherd who is also the guard of the flock at about 5:30am. This told him that a part of the sheep were killed. When he arrived at the place, he saw that seven sheep were slaughtered by wolves, while another 40 died suffocated when they tried to run away and pushed each other.

The owner assessed the damage at about 40,000 lei. He owned 120 sheep overall, but these hadn’t been insured.

The mayor of Cosernita Ion Cojocaru has told IPN’s reporter that he requested the Soroca forestry company to take measures to protect the village and the villagers. Earlier, locals reported having seen wolves near the village that is situated about 1 km of a forest.

The mayor said the pen owner pays taxes for the meadow and the sheepfold, but didn’t insure the animals and can thus claim no damage from the local authorities. If the sheep had been insured, he would have got about 50% of the value of the caused damage.
